Bath Store

Description

A defining feature of this project is the freestanding mirrored changing pod that sits at the centre of the retail space. As a Grade II listed building, a high status Edwardian shopfront set within a modified late Georgian frame, the interior could not be fixed into or built against, so the entire scheme was conceived to stand free of the historic fabric. The joinery and fixtures are freestanding throughout, allowing the store design to read as a contemporary insertion that leaves the period plasterwork and mouldings entirely intact and every intervention fully reversible.

The retail interior balances the demands of a working store with the discipline of conservation. A replacement staircase and new flooring were introduced alongside the careful restoration and redecoration of the original mouldings and plasterwork, with the contemporary palette of finishes drawn to complement the tone of the existing materials. The mirrored pod anchors the layout, reflecting the restored architecture back into the room while housing the changing facilities within a single sculptural form. The result is a heritage retail design that allows a modern brand to sit comfortably within a listed setting.
